Department of English | ||
The Department of English, established in 2018, is one of the university's founding departments. It offers both learner-centric and learning-centric programmes, allowing the student to explore diverse and emerging fields such as Gender and LGBTQ+ Studies, Film Studies, Graphic Narratives, and Pragmatics. The department has also set up a language laboratory to enhance the student's communication skills. With a team comprising both experienced and young faculty, the department provides mentorship in academic, curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. The launch of the BA (Honours) and PhD programmes in the academic year 2024-2025 further exemplifies the department’s commitment to student-centric education. Both the Bachelor's and the Master's curricula follow the NEP 2020 guidelines, including a course on the Indian Knowledge System.
Introduction to the Programmes
MA English MA English is one of the two postgraduate programmes introduced in 2018 at the University. Adopting a Learning Outcomes-based Curriculum Framework, the syllabus at the postgraduate level is designed to provide a student-centred teaching-learning experience. The new curriculum of the MA programme introduces the student to a wide range of courses such as Postcolonial Literature, Graphic Narratives, Gender Studies, Film Studies, Phonetics and Phonology, Morphology and Syntax, Semantics and Pragmatics, and Cultural Studies. The academic significance of the Programme lies in its emphasis on inter- and multi- disciplinary courses. It also gives importance to both language and literary studies and thus enables the student to choose either of the two streams for further studies. In addition to exploring literature, the Programme equips students with essential research skills and methodologies, enabling them to conduct scholarly inquiries, navigate academic resources, and contribute original insights to English studies. BA (Hons.) English The BA (Honours) English programme offers a dynamic exploration of literature and language, introducing the student to various authors, genres, theories, and cultural contexts. Through rigorous study and scholarly writing, the student develops the skills to analyse and interpret literary and visual texts while gaining a deeper understanding of global sociocultural landscapes. The programme fosters critical thinking and effective communication skills, empowering the student to engage meaningfully with diverse perspectives and make valuable contributions to the world of literature. The programme also fosters a research interest and develops practical skills such as teaching, content writing, and linguistic abilities for translations, among others. Beyond literary exploration, the programme equips the student with practical skills applicable to various career paths. With specialised courses in language studies and introductory courses in translation studies, the student gains valuable insights into the intricacies of communication and linguistic analysis. The curriculum emphasises enhancing communication skills and ensuring graduates are well-prepared for professional roles in academia, publishing, media, and other sectors. By offering diverse courses and mandating internships or community service, the Programmes prepare the student with employability skills suited for careers in academia, journalism, content writing, social work, government agencies and research organisations, and human resource development.
