Mathematics and Computing

Programme Description

The Department of Mathematics was established in the Academic Year 2021-22. In view of present industry and technology requirements/demands, the Department name has changed into Department of Mathematics and Computing from the Academic Year 2025-26 onwards. The Department of Mathematics and Computing offers a two-year M.Sc. programme in Mathematics and Computing, which is an advanced version of the traditional M.Sc. Mathematics programme. This updated curriculum reflects the growing importance and intersection of Mathematics and Computer science in various fields including Science, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Data Science (DS). This programme consists of core mathematics courses, which are helpful to the students to clear the national and international level competitive exams like CSIR-NET, GATE, SET, and Ph.D.. This programme also covers foundational level courses like Python and ‘R’ software for programming, Introduction to AI and ML for understanding the practical and techniques in AI, ML and DS. The Department has well equipped labs to provide hands on sessions for the students to improve the programming skills through the advanced mathematical and computational software such as MATLAB and MATHEMATICA. Furthermore, the Department recommends the latest courses in mathematics, statistics, computer science, and related fields through MOOC courses each semester. The Department also encourages/motivates the students towards the latest research on Mathematics, Computer Science, and other disciplines of applied sciences through master’s dissertation projects.

Carrier Opportunities

Many software industries, multinational companies, government sectors, and healthcare industries are rapidly hiring Mathematics and Computing graduates to solve technological and societal issues. After completing this master’s programme, graduates can:

  • Secure Ph.D. admission at top national level institutions, such as IITs, NITs, and Central Universities.
  • Pursue careers as software engineers in industries and companies with higher salary packages than the pure computer science graduates.
  • Develop their own application for societal benefits or become entrepreneurs by launching companies/industries.

    Major Departmental Events

    • Math Expo on the theme “Ramanujan’s Inventions and Mathematical Tools for AI” (21 December, 2024)
    • Distinguished Lecture titled “Mathematics and its Applications” (22 December, 2024).
    • Two Day National Workshop on “Essential Mathematics for AI: Theory and Applications” (23-24 April 2025).
    • One Day Workshop on Advanced Numerical Methods Through ‘R’ Software” (11 October 2025).
